Activists launch group to support Western Sahara cause on Facebook

May 22, 2011

Algeria - MAP - A group of Algerian activists, including professors, researchers and students, have launched a group in the social networking of Facebook to support the Western Sahara cause, called it “Western Sahara: your revolution, our revolution”.
“The Group’s page updates everyday by the developments in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and repression practiced by the Moroccan authorities against the people of Western Sahara,” one of the Group members told Maghreb Independent Press Service.
More than 35 years passed since Morocco invaded Western Sahara in 1975, just one day after Spain, former colonizer of the territory withdrew. In 1991, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire between the Polisario Front, the Saharawi liberation Movement, and morocco in order to conduct a referendum of self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. But Morocco thwarted that referendum.
