Hondurs: teachers protest education law

Tegucigalpa - Independent Maghreb Press Agency - Honduras´s teaching guild protested in San Pedro Sula the Basic Education Law the Congress approved on January 11th in the absence of contenders from the teaching guild claiming the terms will eliminate free public education and specialization per subject matter.

The demonstrators reaffirmed earlier allegations, stressing that "education is a human right not a merchandise" for it further accommodates the wealthy, even relaying on such discriminatory arguments like "lack of room".

Edwin Oliva, president of the Colegio Profesional de Superacion Magisterial, said the new Law has negative effects on every avenues of education and forecasts a sure failure for nurturing confrontation between teachers and parents.

It will be very harmful for the future of childhood, since the government in office is eliminating every education advancement and prays now on public education, which is all left to the people, said Education official Jaime Rodriguez

Oscar Recarte, president of the Colegio de Profesores de Educacion Media, invited the parents to walk to the classrooms with their children on the new school year start on February 1st.

It would be good if they feel the effects of the new Education Law; they will sure blame the missing classrooms and teachers on the government not on the education officials.
