Britain threatens to recognize independent Palestinian state
London - PNN - (MAP) - Britain has threatened to recognize an independent Palestinian state if Israel refuses to open peace talks with the Palestinian authorities.
The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, said last night that Britain is prepared to formally recognise a Palestinian state unless Israel opens peace talks with the Palestinians.
Mr. Cameron warned Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu that the UK will be prepared to recognise an independent Palestine at a United Nations meeting in September.
The two prime ministers met in Downing Street last night after rival Palestinian factions endorsed a final unity pact yesterday.
The unity deal ends four years of bitterness and violence between the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas, the Islamic resistance movement that rules Gaza.
