MEP demands from EU Commission to justify cut in aid to Sahrawi refugees

MEP Neoklis Sylikiotis required from the European Commission to justify its proposal to make cuts in humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugees in the Tindouf camps, in contradiction with UN calls to increase aid to the people of occupied Western Sahara.

The Member of the European Parliament said that such a decision of the European Union "will worsen the already dire situation" in these refugee camps mainly because of "floods" that hit the region.

"How the Commission justifies its proposal to make cuts in the aid it provides to the Saharawi refugee camps, ignoring UN call to the international community?," he wondered in a written question.

The European Parliament demanded from the Commission explanations on the reasons that motivated its proposal to reduce its aid calculated to meet the needs of only 90,000 people, while the UN said that as many as 125,000 people in Tindouf refugee camps are totally dependent on international aid.
