EU won’t engage in activities imposing a fait accompli in occupied Western Sahara
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on Thursday stated that EU institutions will not engage in any activities aimed at imposing a fait accompli in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The European official highlighted the Union will remain attached to the implementation of international law with respect to the UN-recognized borders of Western Sahara.
In this respect, Mogherini revealed that the EU Commission asked a few days ago the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety to correct some mistakes made on the official map of Western Sahara.
She also pointed out that all EU institutions remain committed to the Union’s position with respect to Western Sahara, adding no EU official delegation is authorized to visit the occupied part of the territory.
Mogherini seized the occasion to reiterate EU’s support to the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary General to reach a solution guaranteeing the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations.
