Death of Mohamed El Ayoubi: President of Republic calls on UN SG for mechanism for protection of Sahrawi civilians in occupied territories

(SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front Brahim, Brahim Ghali, has sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, to draw his attention to the serious violations of human rights committed by the Moroccan regime against the defenseless Sahrawi civilians, especially human rights defenders and political prisoners in the Moroccan prisons.

The President of the Republic reminded Mr. Guterres of the death of Mohamed El Ayoubi, one of the 24 prisoners of Gdeim Izik group, who died on February 21, in the occupied city of El-Aaiun, because of the harsh conditions and mistreatment in Moroccan prisons, blaming responsibility of his death on the Moroccan state.

In this context, the President of the Republic stressed the need for the creation of a UN mechanism for the protection of human rights in Western Sahara to end this inhuman situation caused by the Moroccan illegal occupation and its practices that occur in the absence of pressure from the international community.

The late political prisoner, Mohammed El-Ayoubi was arrested after the Moroccan military attack on the camp of Gdeim Izik for the displaced Sahrawis on November 8, 2010. Since his arrest, he has been subjected to serious practices, including rape, beating, torture, deprivation of basic rights and others
