Excellency and Dear Brother,
With the announcement by the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission today of the amalgamated preliminary results of the self-determination referendum, the peace process in Southern Sudan has entered an advanced stage towards the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the region. The honouring by all parties concerned of their commitments under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement has undoubtedly been fundamental to this historic achievement.
It is with great joy that we would like to convey to you and to the brotherly people of Southern Sudan our most sincere congratulations not only on the serene and transparent manner in which the referendum process has unfolded, but also on the crucial role that you have played, with remarkable wisdom and farsightedness, along with His Excellency President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, in ensuring the success of a fair and peaceful peace process, despite the magnitude of the challenges facing the country and the region as a whole.
Excellency and Dear Brother,
History will remember that you have responsibly and courageously opted for the path of transparency and democracy, and have given a remarkable lesson to humanity at large, when you decided to give the people of Southern Sudan the opportunity to exercise their right to self-determination, and to abide by the outcome of the referendum.
Excellency and Dear Brother,
We would like to seize on this opportunity to reiterate our unwavering support and solidary with the Government and people of Southern Sudan in their legitimate quest for self-determination and the establishment of their independent State, as well as our strong resolve to strengthen the relations of friendship, solidarity and mutual support existing between our two peoples, and to boost them to the highest possible level in the interests of our two nations and those of our continent as a whole.
