Western Sahara: Pan African Parliament calls on UN to set date for referendum on self-determination

Pan African Parliament (PAP) called on the United Nations to set a date for the holding of a referendum on Western Sahara people's self-determination, allowing them to decide their own future.
"We join the African Union in its call to set a date for the holding of a referendum allowing the people of Western Sahara, Africa's last colony, making to enjoy their right to self-determination," the eighth annual conference of speakers of African Parliaments said Saturday in a statement.
The annual conference of speakers of African Parliaments was held by the PAP on 4 and 5 August 2016, in Midrand, South Africa, under the theme: "From adoption to ratification of African Union agreements, especially the new Pan African Parliament Protocol: What benefits for Africa."
Since 2009, the Pan African Parliament has been holding annual meetings bringing together the speakers of the member African Parliaments, to discuss issues relating to the activity and agenda of this institution and the African Union.
