President of Republic warns UNSG about Morocco's activities seriousness in Western Sahara territorial waters
The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Frente POLISARIO, Brahim Ghali, warned the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, about the seriousness of Morocco's activities in the territorial waters of occupied Western Sahara.
In a letter sent to Antonio Guterres, the Saharawi leader said that the surveys undertaked by the Kingdom of Morocco by leased vessels, in order to carry out geomorphological studies on the Western Sahara coast, aims to promote Morocco's demand for maritime zones in the Saharawi coast, which contradicts the United Nations rules that regulate the matter.
The letter adds that Morocco had already pushed, last year, legislation to back up the demands of the Moroccan regime consisting in legalizing its occupation and plundering the natural resources of Western Sahara.
Brahim Ghali, recalled that these activities violate the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, which is the essence of the UN peace process agreed upon by both parties in 1991, since carrying out the aforementioned studies is an act linked to the sovereignty of coastal countries, as indicated by the Law of the Sea and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
In the same line, the head of the State, said that the decision of Morocco, harms the effort of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Horst Kohler, which aims to reach a just, lasting solution that guarantees the inalienable right of the people Saharawi to self-determination and independence.
Barahim Ghali, recalled that the Saharawi Government, decided in a statement sent to the former UN SG, that the maritime zone of the Saharawi State is the coast of Western Sahara.
Finally, the President of the Republic, asked the SG to intervene and investigate to determine the circumstances surrounding such activities, as well as hold meetings between the Frente POLISARIO and the Kingdom of Morocco in order to cease the illegalities committed by Morocco.
